Cyber Essentials gives UK organisations a structured way to address common technical cybersecurity weaknesses.
For organisations preparing for certification, responding to customer requirements or reviewing their baseline security controls, technical assessment can help identify weaknesses before formal certification activity. NuageSEC provides security testing and readiness support around relevant technical controls.
Current NCSC technical requirements: v3.3, effective from 27 April 2026. Official NCSC source
This page does not claim that NuageSEC itself awards Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus certificates unless its current certification-body authorisation has been independently verified.
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed scheme intended to help organisations protect against common cyber threats. NCSC identifies five technical control areas, and states that the scheme requirements are reviewed and updated regularly.
Boundary and network controls that restrict unauthorised access to and from the internet.
Configuring devices and software to reduce vulnerabilities and provide only the services required.
Keeping devices and software up to date with the latest security fixes.
Ensuring only authorised users have access to systems, data and applications, with appropriate privilege levels.
Protecting devices from malicious software through appropriate technical controls.
Cyber Essentials uses a verified self-assessment process.
Cyber Essentials Plus provides a higher level of assurance through technical testing by an approved third party. NCSC describes it as involving a technical audit to verify that the technical controls have been correctly implemented.
The currently published NCSC Cyber Essentials Plus test specification v3.2 also requires written permission and scope verification before technical testing begins.
The actual assessment must be mapped to the organisation's defined boundary and current NCSC requirements.
Review relevant boundary and network security controls.
Identify configuration weaknesses that could unnecessarily increase exposure.
Assess whether vulnerable or unsupported software and systems create material security risk.
Assess account permissions, access boundaries and relevant privilege controls.
Review relevant endpoint/security controls within the engagement scope.
The NCSC states that version 3.3 of the Cyber Essentials technical requirements is the current version, effective from 27 April 2026. This page links directly to the current NCSC requirements rather than reproducing the complete official requirements.

Cyber Essentials can have commercial significance beyond baseline security. The UK government's PPN 014 says that, for specified categories of public contracts within its scope, suppliers may be required to hold Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus certification, or demonstrate equivalent controls. It applies to specified central government and NHS procurement contexts.
This makes it important for suppliers to understand the exact certification or contractual requirement before selecting an assessment approach.
A completed questionnaire can indicate where an organisation believes controls are implemented. Technical testing can add another layer of confidence by examining whether relevant controls are actually operating as intended within the defined scope. For example:
A firewall may exist but expose unnecessary services
Accounts may exist with excessive access
Systems may remain vulnerable because updates are incomplete
Security configuration may differ across endpoints
The assessment should be designed around the actual Cyber Essentials boundary.
Depending on scope, the output should make it clear which findings require action and which relate specifically to the assessment scope.
Where relevant controls fall short of the Cyber Essentials requirements.
Findings mapped to each of the five technical control areas.
Supporting technical evidence for each observation.
Severity and business-context prioritisation.
Practical recommendations for closing identified gaps.
Where included in the engagement.
A NuageSEC technical assessment does not automatically do any of the following:
Only the appropriate certification body can issue a formal Cyber Essentials certificate.
Cyber Essentials Plus requires independent technical testing by an approved third party through the official scheme route.
NuageSEC is an independent technical security testing provider, not an NCSC certification body.
Our work prepares and hardens your environment; it does not substitute for the official scheme assessment.
Certification outcomes are determined by the certification body against the current scheme requirements.
Contract-specific requirements must be interpreted against the organisation's actual obligations.
The certification process must be completed through the appropriate scheme route and certification body.

NCSC currently lists version 3.3, effective from 27 April 2026.
No. Cyber Essentials is based on self-assessment, while Cyber Essentials Plus includes independent technical testing by an approved party.
No. Testing and readiness support should not be represented as certification.
Yes. PPN 014 establishes Cyber Essentials/Cyber Essentials Plus requirements for specified government procurement contexts within its scope.
The service is positioned around technical readiness and security testing; any claim of formal certification-body authorisation must be independently verified before publication.
NuageSEC is an independent technical security assessment and penetration testing provider. NuageSEC is not an NCSC-appointed Cyber Essentials certification body or official scheme assessor unless separately and currently verified. Our assessments identify technical gaps against the relevant control areas and provide remediation guidance to assist organisations preparing for formal certification. Our deliverables do not constitute legal advice or formal certification.
